DDG-51 Arleigh Burke class Aegis destroyer (Flight I & II) for Strike Fighters 2 by WhiteBoySamurai
Last updated 2012/11/03

v3.5: Cosmetic updates (rigging, new gun barrels, hull texture), significant weapon updates, new sound effects
v3.0: Remapped model, baked textures, added detail, updated gun and weapon data, added working Harpoon missiles and SRBOC launchers
v2.0: Tweaked mesh and textures; fixed shadow issues; added detail; updated data, weapons, and decal sets for SF2:NA/March 2012 patch.
v1.0: Initial release
This model is not to be used in any commercial or for-profit packages. It may, however, be used in any freeware mod.

Note: The weapon systems, collision mesh, and decals have been updated for compatibility with SF2: North Atlantic and the March 2012 patch. If you have not installed/do not plan to install either, this model will not work properly.
When setting up a task force, using the USNgrey texture will allow hull decals based on the ship number. If placing the model as a single ship instead of a task force, please use the different texture sets to get a specific hull number.

Installation (SF2):

Simply extract each folder into the matching folders in your mod directory. If you installed an ordnance pack, you may already have some of the guns and/or sounds.

Optional procedures:

You may wish to add the SPY-1 radar signature to your threat library. Make sure the "RWR_AEGIS.tga" is in your Flight folder, and add the line "SPY-1=RWR_AEGIS.tga" to your RWR.lst files.

If you do not already have the sounds installed, add this data to your soundlist.ini:

SoundFile0xx=CVNAmbient
SoundFile0xx=ShipMovement
SoundFile0xx=SAM1
SoundFile0xx=SAM2
SoundFile0xx=SM2VLS

Designer notes:

This model represents the Arleigh Burke class destroyers Flight I (DDG-51~DDG-71) and Flight II (DDG-72~78), in service from 1991 to present (upgrades and refits notwithstanding). They are among the largest and most heavily armed destroyers in the world.

All Arleigh Burkes are equipped with the Mk41 VLS, with a 32-cell launcher forward and a 64-cell launcher aft. Flight I and II Arleigh Burkes had 6 cells dedicated to a pair of collapsible cranes that assisted in reloading, so the total missile count on this ship is 90.

Flight I and II ships are externally identical, with only internal systems changes that cannot be represented in this game. Therefore I've assigned the two versions different VLS loadouts.

In reality, the ship would carry a mix of SM-2, VL-ASROC, and Tomahawk missiles, but game engine limitations force the ships to be more dedicated in their roles. Flight I ships (51~71) are equipped for air defense, while Flight II ships (72~78) are equipped for land attack.

Flight I&II Burkes are also equipped with 2 x 4 launch canisters for RGM-84 Harpoon missiles. Both models have functional Harpoons, but the default Flight I's surface detection range is restricted due to game engine limitations.

The model is equipped with ECM. I'm not exactly sure if this helps against anti-ship missiles, but in my testing so far, Soviet ASMs often lose track against this ship. (This could just be because they're Soviet missiles, after all...)

Super Rapid Blooming Offboard Chaff (SRBOC) launchers have been added to the ship. These will deploy "chaff and flares" to attempt to defeat incoming cruise missiles. The ship will not launch them against aircraft unless they are flying very low.

Known issues:

Unlike the real thing, this vessel will only launch missiles against one target at a time. She will, however, engage enemy aircraft and cruise missiles relentlessly at operationally realistic ranges. Use the "EX" data file if you are unsatisfied with the performance.

While real Standard Missiles have an anti-surface mode (which is rarely used operationally), the SM-2 armed model is restricted to anti-air only. The vertical launched SM-2s has trouble locking on to other ships, usually just going straight up and self-destructing.

The included Tomahawks are now proper cruise missiles. The real-life RGM-109C uses TERCOM (terrain contour matching), but it has been given a shallow lofted profile to attack land targets without crashing into hills.

A flight deck is enabled by default. A fake catapult provides assisted takeoff, but there are no arresting wires, so exercise caution when landing.

Some liberties have been taken to ensure that weapon systems work effectively despite game engine limitations.

An experimental data file for the Flight I is included, labelled "DDG-51_data_EX.ini" (The "EX" stands for "experimental" as well as "extremely dangerous.") This sacrifices the cool-looking vertical launch for a significantly more accurate multi-target system that better reflects the actual performance of an Aegis destroyer, and enables Harpoon missiles as well. Use whichever you prefer, depending on if realistic visuals or realistic performace is more important to you.

Special thanks:
-Colmack for Aegis combat system testing and very helpful findings
-KJakker for CIWS testing, debugging, and optimized gun data
-WilliamT at the 3D warehouse for the original hull on which this model was loosely based
-Everyone else at CombatAce for their support and encouragement
