“Let’s start by looking at the Vertical Situation Display or VSD aka the “radar scope”. With the radar turned off, the only information provided on the display are two forms of airspeed.
The number in the lower right corner following the “T” is, well, err, it depends on which version of the sim you’re flying. If you are flying LOMAC V1.02, then it’s as it’s supposed to be. It’s our True Airspeed (TAS). That’s our calibrated airspeed corrected for altitude and temperature. As such, it’s the physical speed at which we are actually traveling through the air.
But, unfortunately, the Flaming Cliffs add-on changed it --intentionally or not-- to represent something akin to the Indicated Airspeed (IAS). So in versions V1.1 and beyond it’s a slightly lower number than the airspeed number that appears on the HUD. It no longer represents TAS, as it should.”

“He’s above 12,ooo feet and below 18,000. Let’s say his altitude is about 15,000.
So, while in RWS mode we instantly have range and bearing information for any contact we see and, with an additional bit of radar antenna work, we can get an altitude estimate as well. So we know where he is in terms of bearing, range, and altitude and we can pass that information on to someone else.
One way of doing that is a BRA call. B-R-A: Bearing/Range/Altitude. Let’s see. Our heading is now about 312 degrees. He’s still 50L at about 42 nm.
So, a BRA call on this contact world be: “Springfield BRA 262, 42, medium.” “Springfield” is our callsign. The contact’s bearing is 262 degrees. His range is 42 nautical miles. The words “degrees” and “nautical miles” are inferred. And his altitude “block” is medium.”
